Printed Pots by Joan & Jack Hardie
Using 3D printing, Joan and Jack Hardie can design and produce ceramics that cannot be made in any other way. They have built their own 3D printer which extrudes very thin coils of soft clay which are then pressed down in layers to build their original designs.
The clay is prepared by hand to get a very even consistency with no air. The couple are inspired by plants, seed pots or shells when using the 3D Computer Aided Design programme to generate a code for the printer and is made out of porcelain or glazed stoneware.
The pots are then fired as normal to 1260C in a gas kiln. Click here to see a video of the printer in action.
Examples of the finished ceramics are currently on sale at the CoCA shop at York Art Gallery.
Joan and Jack will be giving a demonstration at Day of Clay 2016.
