York Art Gallery has been named as the Visitor Attraction of the Year (Over 50,000 visitors) at this year’s Visit York Tourism Awards.

This is the second year in a row the gallery has received the accolade, which was announced at the awards ceremony at the National Railway Museum last night (June 22).

It comes after a successful 12 months for the gallery which won the national Family Friendly Museum Award, received a Certificate of Special Commendation at the European Museum of the Year Awards and was a  finalist in the national Art Fund Museum of the Year.

Reyahn King, chief executive of York Museums Trust, said:

“We are delighted that York Art Gallery has been named the Visitor Attraction of the Year for a second year in a row. This is a fantastic achievement and the gallery team are very proud to have had their hard work and enthusiasm rewarded in this way.

“We have had a brilliant 12 months which has seen work by some of the biggest names in art go on show for people to enjoy, as well as national and international recognition for the recent transformation of the gallery and its gardens. We are committed to ensuring the gallery remains one of the best in the country as well as a friendly, exciting and innovative focal point of York’s cultural scene.”

Sally Greenaway, Head of Visit York, said,

“York Art Gallery’s national and international exhibition programme makes a significant contribution to our tourism offer in York.  Current events like the Aesthetica Art Prize and Doug Fishbone’s Leisure Land Golf demonstrate the Gallery’s commitment to innovation and ensuring we celebrate our modernity and creativity in York as well as our rich heritage.”
