The Brown Betty: 300 years and counting

Ceramic designer Ian McIntyre researched the history of this globally recognisable, yet largely uncelebrated, tabletop item as part of his Doctoral Award with Manchester School of Art, York Art Gallery and the British Ceramics Biennial.

Ian’s research project explores the Brown Betty teapot’s design evolution to become “an icon, not because of nostalgia but because it’s the best at what it does” in the ritual of tea making. His work ‘Brown Betty: The Archetypal Teapot, an exhibition of form and function, refined over generations’ was displayed at Vitsoe London as part of London Design Festival 2016. Ian will join the CoCA team at the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA)’s 51st annual conference Future Flux in Portland, Oregon from 22-25th March 2017.
